Awareness, not perfection

Being aware of my thoughts and feelings has allowed me to bring happiness into my life and deeper my connection with myself and others. Today I’m sharing how compassion and forgiveness helped me find peace in my mind.
Before, I would have this idea of the person I wanted to be. In every category of my life where it counted, I had a vision of myself, but I would never come close to that. In my mind, I was never good enough. I felt ashamed and angry with myself for not being perfect. It was terrible to feel that way every day, and one day I decided I had enough. I finally asked for guidance and was brought to awareness.

I make it a point to be aware of the limiting beliefs and the negative thoughts as they enter my mind. Limiting beliefs are beliefs we believe to be the absolute truth. Those beliefs keep us from doing certain things. Negative thoughts and limiting beliefs are often there to “protect” us so we don’t put ourselves in a position to get hurt. Negative thoughts and limiting beliefs always operate from a place of fear.
When negative self-talk happens I extend compassion to myself for thinking those thoughts. Think of the negative voice as a child or friend that needs extra love. I recognize the negative thought, ask why it’s here, respond kindly, and forgive it.
Forgiveness is my superpower. I forgive the thought for existing, forgive myself for having it, and forgive the guilt that comes with it. It makes a world of difference when you decide to forgive yourself.
I then choose to welcome in peace. I make peace with who I am, where I am and the progress I am making.
By being aware of my thoughts and how they make me feel I’m bringing myself back to the present. By treating myself with compassion, forgiving myself, and welcoming peace I am accepting myself. I get to let myself off the hook and be free. When I treat myself with compassion and forgiveness I can extend that to others and let them off the hook too. It makes life more enjoyable and happier. All of that brings serenity to my mind and body, and we all deserve that.
Remember that awareness, not perfection, is the goal!
